Hydroxycut Major Recall, Causes Serious Damage to Liver and Even Death

Ladies,
I almost bought it last week at the Vitamin Store for a cheating boost to my weight loss nightmare. The Food and Drug Administration said the company that makes the dietary supplement has agreed to recall 14 Hydroxycut products. Available in grocery stores and pharmacies, Hydroxycut is advertised as made from natural ingredients. At least 9 million packages were sold last year, the FDA said.

Dr. Linda Katz of the FDA's food and nutrition division said the agency has received 23 reports of liver problems, including the death of a 19-year-old boy living in the Southwest. The teenager died in 2007, and the death was reported to the FDA this March.

Other patients experienced symptoms ranging from jaundice, or yellowing of the skin, to liver failure. One received a transplant and another was placed on a list to await a new liver. The patients were otherwise healthy and their symptoms began after they started using Hydroxycut, regulators said.

I just read the bit about some good music to get you going - I love the "Now That's What I Call Music" series, they have a ton of really great songs. My gym mix currently has from vol. 69 "Now Your Gone" by Basshunter, "Some Kinda Rush" by Booty Luv (he he he) and "Work" by Kelly Rowland. I have pulled "Disturbia" by Rihanna, "Girls" by Sugababes and "Up" by The Saturdays from vol. 71.

Oh my God, you guys have to add Dance Wiv Me to your list. It makes me jump off of the treadmill and start dancing. What a crack up song.

I have HORRID music taste when it comes to working out...some of my current favorites from my marathon play list include:

Flo Rida: Right Round
Jai Ho (from Slumdog Millionaire)
Any songs from The Veronicas
All Britney Spears
Justin Timberlake
Kelly Clarkson's angry songs
I Wanna Be Bad (Willa Ford)
It's Raining Men (The Weather Girls)
Murder on the Dancefloor (Sophie Ellis Bextor)
Hips Don't Lie (Shakira)
Stronger (Kanye West)
Addicted (Saving Abel)
The Way you Move, and Hey Ya (Outkast)
Stacy's Mom (Fountains of Wayne)
Michael Jackson's old school stuff (Just can't get enough...)

Okay, I could go on forever!

Now that the weather is nicer I may take my cardio outdoors. I need to make a new mix for my IPOD, can anyone suggest any fun fast energizing songs - God knows I need them! How bad is it that I like "Rockstar" by Hannah Montana for working out??? ANother favorite is "Mr. Brightside" by The Killers.

Hulya--I think the reason I like Weight Watchers so much, is that if I make smart choices throughout my day, it's okay if I splurge on wine, or a little dessert, etc. I got in all of my servings of fruits and veggies, and ate rare ahi tuna for some protein with dinner.

Plus, you get the "activity" points, which can be used on a little extra splurge.

I know your nutritionist limited you to two glasses of wine per week, but for me, I could not make something like that a lifestyle change...we love good food, and we love to drink good wine with it.

I think that finding the balance makes the most sense.

Is anybody running in the Run for the Shelter race this weekend? I am signed up for the half, but might have to switch down to the 5K because of some lingering marathon ailments...

Good luck, if you are, and enjoy the sunshine on the agenda today and tomorrow!

Yesterday the weather got warm. So last night my husband and I went out to eat at Vintage 50. I ate well. Well, they make a great appetizer with wings, but only had two (300 calories hello), I ate seared Tuna Asian salad (have not idea but it was healthy with glass noodles, seaweed and cucumbers), and 2 glasses of Chardonnay. That is where I blew it. One would have been fine. Still though, I kept the calorie count under my required list.

The challenge is the weekend! Good luck and enjoy everyone.

TGIF! So how's your week going? Remember not to blow it this weekend. With the warm weather and myriad of opportunities to enjoy teh great outdoors, do something active this weekend. Keep your meals fresh and simple. With seasonal ingredients like asparagus and grilled poultry or fish, you can create delicious meals this weekend to serve you all week long. Check out the Leesburg Flower and Garden Festival for some greening options to add color and pizazz to your home and office. See you next week . . .

Shelley--if you've just started marathon training, I highly recommend the Hal Higdon training plan. It's so easy to follow, and really brings you up in mileage safely. With smart food choices, and that kind of running, twenty pounds will MELT off!

I don't recommend Baltimore for your first race, though. It was my first 1/2 marathon, and ohmygoodness, it was SO much more hilly than I had expected/trained for!
Comment by Nancy Sheehy on March 3, 2009 at 4:50pm
That's awesome, Shelley! Best of luck.
