EDNOS: The Eating Disorder You Haven't Heard Of

When I received the diagnosis of Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified two years ago, I had a very mixed reaction. On the one hand, the label didn’t seem to fit. Me? With an eating disorder? I wasn’t underweight, and in fact was technically on the edge of being overweight. I had intentionally thrown up from time to time, but certainly was not bulimic. I had tried starving myself periodically in an attempt to get my weight under control, but I definitely wasn’t anorexic. At the most I…See More

Review of America the Beautiful Documentary

One of the first questions Darryl Roberts asks in his documentary America the Beautiful is “Who benefits from women not feeling beautiful?” As the film spends the next 105 minutes trying to find the answers to that question, you witness the full impact of our obsession with beauty through tales of girls with eating disorders, plastic surgeries gone wrong, and the whirlwind modeling career of Gerren Taylor who did her first runway shows at the age of 12.Roberts, who undertook this project after…See More

Your exercise routine has fizzled out. Now what?

Ok, so we’re nearly two weeks into January, and I am wondering how many fitness resolutions are already out the window. As someone who loves being active, I’m all for goals that promote a more active lifestyle. But if you don’t get off on the right start, well-meaning intentions will only go so far in delivering you to the gym. Before you commit to getting fit, evaluate your motives, and make sure you’re doing it for the right reasons. (Read…See More

The Importance of 'We' Time

As marriages evolve, particularly with the introduction of children, it can be easy to forget the importance of “we time”. In this day and age, moms are always encouraged to carve out “me time” for themselves, but marriages and partnerships need extra nurturing and attention periodically too. It provides an opportunity to reconnect with the person you have chosen to spend the rest of your life with. At some points in your marriage, when you are more in tune to each other, this might not seem so…See More

"This advice doesn't mention anything about the food. The French enjoy good, real, whole food -- not processed, artificial, low-fat diet stuff. The mantra less is more is a part of their lifestyle, and they know that when you eat really really…"

Cold Weather Styles That Flatter

I love all four seasons, but as with many people, Fall is probably my favorite season. Sure, the beautiful colors of the changing leaves are spectacular, but equally important for me is the opportunity to put away shorts, and comfortably break out my jeans, sweaters, and jackets again. I LOVE sweater weather. I love cardigans, I love turtle-necks, I loved ribbed-knit sweaters, pull-overs, sweater coats -- anything knitted that keeps me warm and feeling cozy. The problem is, like any other type…See More

Acknowledging Feelings in Your Children

When my 8-year-old daughter fell while jumping around in her room, she began crying that she'd been hurt. After 8 years, I have learned to distinguish between "big hurts" and "little hurts" and this clearly was a little hurt. I asked her in a soothing voice if she was ok, where was she hurt, and does she need me to look at it? I knew, of course, that she was ok. But what she was looking for in that moment was a validation of her feelings -- an acknowledgment of her pain, even if it was brief…See More
