Avatar's Success in Technology is Riddled with a Sorry Plot

I recently have been enjoying the time I have in the evenings with my husband due to a great new babysitter find. Don't ask about contact info, I am not sharing her. So, here it goes. We have been going to the movies mid-week after the children go to bed so I have a few movies I would love to talk about. Today my brain is stuck on Avatar.
I watched Avatar (two times, one with hubby and one time with 8 year old son) in 3D. I have to tell you, everything you heard about it is right. It is a visual masterpiece and no you don't feel like throwing up from the effect of the 3D technology. Frankly, within 10 minutes you are effortlessly a part of the movie. The visuals are stunning. By the end of the movie, I wanted to be a blue 8 foot tall woman with a tail. I do. I was mesmerized.

James Cameron is a genius and I can't imagine what he sees in his brain to make a world like this come alive. I studied Film in college and have an idea of what it takes to make a movie. But this movie, not a clue.

Ok, now my critique.

Visuals: Check.

Sound: Check.

Costumes: Check.

Music/Score: Check.

Technology: Double Check.

The storyline: not a check. So simple and in your face, even makes a liberal environmental blush. You see Mr. Cameron kept the story line simple and in the tradition of old Hollywood so you never spend a second of your viewing time trying to figure out what is happening. You know what will happen. You know how it will end. You are never diverted from the real reason you are there: to enjoy the view.

Having said that, I know I can carry an emotional load and still enjoy the view. I can think and watch. I could have figured some things out for myself, really did not need it all spelled out for me.

So the verdict: totally awesome and definitely a must see in the theater. Take your kids too. My 8 year old was okay with the bad words and the suspense factor. Younger ones should stay home.

Ugh! I haven't seen it yet!!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE George Clooney! I can't believe I haven't seen it yet. I actually read some of the book quite some time ago, but lost interest. (Can't remember why -- it was a while ago). But I would sit through an insurance convention if it meant I got to look at George the entire time. I really want to be his best friend. ;)

I know what you mean. Depth of personality! Well, speaking of depth of personality and eye candy for 2 hours: what did you think of Up in the Air? http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1810062520/details

P.S. Staring at Sam Worthington for two hours wasn't so bad. ;)

Maybe it's a guy thing. When we walked out of that movie, my husband and a friend (also a guy) were just stunned. All I kept thinking through the whole thing was that I should be really loving this movie, but I just didn't connect with it. I agree that the visuals were stunning, but for me it stopped there. I wanted to be attached to the characters, concerned with their plight, but I was never really drawn in. I hadn't considered that this could be because of the shallowness of the plot, but I guess that's what it was. It was the same old story told over and over again with few, if any, detours.

Of course, Hollywood is good at rehashing old themes -- really, there aren't that many. But it's the depth of characters that generally draws me in and is the deciding factor as to whether or not I give a full two thumbs up, and this movie was just lacking.

Glad we see eye to eye! :)

Here is another idea: http://movies.yahoo.com/news/movies.ap.org/some-see-racist-theme-al...

Do you agree? Is it a racist movie or is it simply a traditional plot?
