I recently have been enjoying the time I have in the evenings with my husband due to a great new babysitter find. Don't ask about contact info, I am not sharing her. So, here it goes. We have been going to the movies mid-week after the children go to bed so I have a few movies I would love to talk about. Today my brain is stuck on
Avatar.
I watched Avatar (two times, one with hubby and one time with 8 year old son) in 3D. I have to tell you, everything you heard about it is right. It is a visual masterpiece and no you don't feel like throwing up from the effect of the 3D technology. Frankly, within 10 minutes you are effortlessly a part of the movie. The visuals are stunning. By the end of the movie, I wanted to be a blue 8 foot tall woman with a tail. I do. I was mesmerized.
James Cameron is a genius and I can't imagine what he sees in his brain to make a world like this come alive. I studied Film in college and have an idea of what it takes to make a movie. But this movie, not a clue.
Ok, now my critique.
Visuals: Check.
Sound: Check.
Costumes: Check.
Music/Score: Check.
Technology: Double Check.
The storyline: not a check. So simple and in your face, even makes a liberal environmental blush. You see Mr. Cameron kept the story line simple and in the tradition of old Hollywood so you never spend a second of your viewing time trying to figure out what is happening. You know what will happen. You know how it will end. You are never diverted from the real reason you are there: to enjoy the view.
Having said that, I know I can carry an emotional load and still enjoy the view. I can think and watch. I could have figured some things out for myself, really did not need it all spelled out for me.
So the verdict: totally awesome and definitely a must see in the theater. Take your kids too. My 8 year old was okay with the bad words and the suspense factor. Younger ones should stay home.
