India; The Good, The Bad and The Ugly (Part 2 of 3)

The Bad

I have seen poverty in India like in no other country that I visited so far. Every year, millions of people migrate from country side to approximately 200 cities around the continent. Their main goal is to make few extra Rupees per week so they can feed their kids and send them to better schools, ensuring a better life. In India, the public schools (fee based) are in such bad shape that most families try to send their kids to private schools. With the influx of millions of people, urban problems seem too much to handle for any country. Shanty towns can be seen everywhere. I saw makeshift cardboard homes build against the high walls that protect expensive villas. There are entire families living in these dwellings with no running water, electricity (unless stolen) or sewer. I have even seen goats tied to the doors of these makeshift dwellings. With this many people packed into a small area come the traffic problems.

The traffic rule in India is that there are no rules. It is the "wild wild east" attitude that prevails among thousands of cars, bikes, motorbikes, rickshaws, elephants and humans who share the road. In India you can expect the unexpected; like a motorbike driving towards you on the wrong side of the road or an old guy in turban stopping in the middle of a busy road to look at a building.

One of the first things that you notice is the amount of horn honking. It is a constant background noise that never stops. I once tried to count the number of times my driver honked the horn during the ride between my hotel and the office which is 30 minutes away. By the time we reached the corner, of the street where my hotel was located, I was up to 16. I gave up. In fact, in India you are expected to honk the horn as a part of your defensive driving strategy. You see trucks and cars with the writing painted in the back that states "Please Honk."

I was told by my Indian friends that if you get involved in an accident where you did not honk your horn, you may be found guilty. Honking the horn is so much part of the daily street life that you never see anyone get upset about it. Despite all of this madness, Indians are the most even tempered drivers that I have ever seen. Traffic in Delhi made me appreciate the chaos of Manhattan. India is fast becoming richer with an already 200 million people strong middle class. I am certain that with time and money, shanty towns will turn into proper suburbs. I am less certain that the cultural traffic mess will get any relief soon.

Tomorrow, I will write about the ugly side of India. Stay tuned....

you can try and catch up with the western world.....as all third world countried try to do..even though a third world country was in reality a producy of colonial rule divide and conquer, taking away vasts amounts of gold and wealth which made india at that time 18th centuty the richest place on earth...conincendently when they left it eas the poorest place on earth. So modern india has alot truths to uncover. in a country where the rich poor divide is most apparent where 80% of the poor are controlled by the remaining 20 % wealthy. SO therefore theire live style and choices are reinforced bytheir way of life..for example a rich would want to eb assoicated with luxuries from all over the world, embrace pub culutre, drinking goin to clubs, so the rich reside in the same envirmonts all rich people do. Then the question is do these 20% rich people who own and control 90% of indias wealth, control india morals and future. Do these rich classes who align themselves with western values, having lived in that enviroment, do they represent he best for the whole of india. While the rich are campaiing for society in which religon and morals play little part to make way for a complete capitalist society in which the rich live out happy lives and the poor never being able to work out of poverty, drink and pub culture eroding their life as a means of espace from the poverty, therfore draggin them down further and futher. So my question is it not the riches responsilbity to maintian those morals and guidelines which they expect and give to theri own clases to filter down to the poor. As the rich in india learn englishg and western ways the poor will reamin deeply rooted to faith as the only outlet. Therfore by apeasing to the rich ...society will in the end suffer the most, where monney is not being invested in to poor, whre commerialsim and capitlism will make ppl decide on their own happiness of others. most will choose their own. So why our poor children who cant eat, sleep get eduucated, go to clubs and pubs, they will watch ppl of their own race...the rich classes, will use and abuse them, and then play and frolick in front of them...the capitalist soiecty is not one of cohesion, longing and love...it is what is happening in india. the divide. the right. but no responsibilty.

It's amazing the culture shock that we all experience when traveling to other countries. The types of things we take for granted. Even when I go back to Brazil, a country I know well, it's easy to find fault with how things are done and how I feel we do it better here in the States. I suppose that this is also adds to the problem in how other countries see us as being cocky and acting superior. I wish I knew how to solve that dilemma in my own mind.

Tracey,

From what I see on TV about Haiti, they seem to be doing much worse. India has the largest middle class in the world with 200 million people. Problem is that it is a small portion of the 1 billion total population.

reminds me of Haiti, except I do not feel the same hope fro Haiti as you do for India. Very sad.
