India; The Good, The Bad and The Ugly (Part 3 of 3)

The Ugly

India is home to billion people from different ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds. There are close to 120 million Muslims living in India whose ancestor, Jihan Shah, build the famous Taj Mahal. Diverse groups live side by side, unmixed, and in general superficial harmony. When tensions arise, they explode with violence. The rapid growth of a 200 million strong middle class that demands increased openness and embraces western values creates an equally strong opposing force in the form of Hindu nationalism. If you can believe it, India has right-wing Hindu vigilante groups loosely linked to the BJP Political Party and who are active in many parts of India. They target Muslim and Christian minorities as well as events such as the Valentine's Day.

During my one week stay, two disturbing incidents caught my attention. First, a group of College girls and boys were attacked and beaten for drinking beers at a bar. The incident was caught on camera showing riffraff Hindu right wing youth beating young girls in the streets. In reaction to this "The Consortium of Pub-going, Loose and Forward Women" was formed on Facebook last Thursday with 5000+ female and male members. The group exhorted women to "walk to the nearest pub and buy a drink" on Valentine's Day in protest of the right wing Hindu nationalists.

The second incident involved the twisted tale of a young Hindu girl who committed suicide. She was attacked for going to an ice-cream parlor with her Muslim male friend. She was dragged out, taken to a nearby empty building and beaten. Once she and her boy friend got on a bus to go home, it was stopped and attacked with stones. Her Muslim boy friend was taken down from the bus and beaten by the Hindu nationalists. The story became even more disturbing when she committed suicide. Her family accused the young Muslim boy of rapping their daughter and said that she committed suicide in shame. Police arrested the Muslim boy while the Hindu nationalists who beat the Hindu girl and the Muslim boy are at large.

As India becomes richer, more modern and industrialized, these tensions are sure to increase in frequency. There is a big divide between the haves and have-nots. While 200+ million people are leveraging the global trade to live a better life, the remaining majority is increasingly being left behind.

This is not an Indian problem, but an issue that even faces us here in the US of A. We should learn from the Indian experience and stop the erosion of our own middle class.

Nikhil,

Thank you for the great insight that you provided above. India has only one way to go and it is UP. As for those who are not familiar with the squirrel story, here it is with the picture. My doctor has a family stuffed squirrel. She has been all around the world including the great wall of China. I traveled to India with it and took a picture to demonstrate. Here is the picture with one of our good friends in India.

Interesting point, Murat, and a tad embarrassing to see this (the Ram Sena incident) online. Of course, that is indeed the problem when you have open press and democracy! But the act itself is pretty ghastly - and there is no defense or explanation!!!
India, as you have rightly noted through your earlier parts, is a curious mixture of the past and present, the right and left (and the wrong as you can see), liberalism and extremism - more than anywhere else I have seen. For its size and complexity, it is a tough problem to solve. If you go looking for problems and issues, you will find plenty (and more ghastly than you have noted here)... but if you go looking for successes, you will find plenty as well (both in her past, present and future). For more information on her past, read on PBS - http://www.pbs.org/thestoryofindia/timeline/1/. What I find amazing is that it is all out there for you to look at, jeer and perhaps applaud. Watch the film Slumdog Millionaire, and you will know what I mean. A lot of Indians have chided the open squalor demonstrated there, but I like the fact that its a comedy, it all comes right in the end...
By the way, did you finally get the picture of the squirrel? Do post!

taj mahal or ancient shiva palace

the whole world looks at the taj mahal as a beautiful muslim building made for his wife. The truth is even more richer..that the taja mahal was in fact a temple devoted to shiva. For many people raised with idea that the taj mahal was built for love, from a king to a queen a very disneyesque story that the world no belives. so as many people around the world and those who have visited the temple, lay their eyes to a beautiful building many are resistant even anger to suggest that the TRUTH is that it was a hindu temple that was taken over and edited to represen an islamic faith.

you might not agree. but at least you can do is read the evidence. does it matter that the taj mahal is infact a glorious temple dedicated to SHIVA .some might not care that the taj mahal was in fact a hindu place of worship.some might !
