Still Big in Japan

Who remembers the band Alphaville? They were a popular European band in the 80s and had a string of hits that included the song "Big in Japan." I still hear their songs being played on Sirius Eighties channel. Apparently they still have an appeal with today's youth.

I gave my older iPod to my son. More like, he asked for it and took it. I did not mind, it was old and clunky with today's standards. I now use iPod nano that I lovingly call "the pill." Before I gave my iPod to my son, I cleaned out such adult favorites like Ludacris' (or as his friends call him, Luda) Stand Up because of lyrics like "Watch out for the medallion, my diamonds are reckless. Feels like a midget is hangin' from my necklace" and other fine terminologies I rather avoid in this forum.

I kept the safe songs of 70s and 80s that included David Bowie's Space Oddity, "Ground control to Major Tom" anyone. Alpaville with their old hit "Big in Japan" was also one the songs left behind. It was hilarious when after listening to the songs, my son came down to the kitchen and said "Dad, I love this song Big in Japan. It is so cool."

I felt like I was watching a clip from the movie "The Truman Show." I felt obligated to tell my son "Hey, those songs are not really cool anymore. You should really listen to The Jonas Brothers." But I changed my mind. Why burst his bubble and tell him what to like and what to think? That's what MTV is here for. I am here to love him unconditionally, even if he listens to his man's old "records. iPod list"
